Science
Science is all about being curious, asking questions, and exploring the world around us. In our school, we learn science by doing science! That means we don’t just read about ideas — we investigate them, test them, and discover answers for ourselves.
Throughout our science lessons, we use the skills of working scientifically. These skills help us think like real scientists. We learn how to:
- Ask questions about what we notice
- Make predictions about what we think might happen
- Set up tests to find out more
- Observe and measure closely using our senses and tools
- Record what we see in drawings, charts, and tables
- Look for patterns and explain our ideas
- Share our findings with others
- Evaluating by reflecting on the success of the enquiry
These skills are woven into every exciting topic we explore — from plants and animals to forces, materials, space, and beyond. Whether we are growing seeds, building bridges, watching shadows move, or observing mini-beasts, we are practising how scientists think and work.
Our science curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and help every child see that science is everywhere. By working scientifically, we learn not only new facts, but also how to explore, problem-solve, and understand the world in a hands-on, meaningful way.
How can we see Science Progression throughout the key stages?
Throughout the years, the working scientifically skills are developed as the little scientists move through Forres. In Early Years, the children are surrounded by real life Science and children are encouraged to verbally ask questions and be curious. In Key Stage 1, the children begin to ask simple questions. In Lower Key Stage 2, children create their own relevant questions about different topics. In Upper Key Stage 2, children need to use their Scientific understanding to create a range of questions.
